As a result, the Center held 29 webinars and in-person events attended by over 1500 participants.
In the reporting year, the health program supported research on advancing public health through data science – a partnership with the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia
University Mailman School of Public Health, Addis Ababa University, and the University of Nairobi. Further, we provided a base for stakeholders to deepen their knowledge and address rising sexual gender-based violence and mental health cases occasioned by the pandemic. Through these initiatives, the Center hopes to spur insight and innovations on tackling health problems and promote dialogue to inform policy to address sexual gender-based violence and mental health, among other health concerns affecting the overall health programs in the region.
Graça Machel Trust South Africa
Ida led a team of creative professionals and educators to step down the contents of the Haki 4 ALL Online Digital Platform that sought to educate African children on how to report violations based on the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) Complaints Procedures. The colourful Self-Study Workbook combined a series of interactive games, and stories for children to be able to understand their rights and utilize the AU complaints mechanism which is key to reducing incidences of violations for children.
Since then, GMT has piloted HAKI 4 ALL Children, both the English interactive digital learning platform and the self-study Workbook, in 3 countries – Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa, with the French version of the Workbook piloted in DRC and Burundi. Subsequently, over 2000 children have been trained as HAKI Child Rights Ambassadors. (The workbook is one of the highly downloaded resources from the Mtoto News Website.) to confirm GMT envisions this training to have a positive impact on over 10000 children in these countries. HAKI clubs have been set up in the 5 pilot countries through GMT partners – Rays of Hope, Burundi Child Rights Coalition, Uganda Child Rights NGO Network, and Mtoto News.
